Pangong Tso

Pangong Tso is one of Ladakh’s most spectacular high-altitude lakes, famous for its extraordinary shades of blue, dramatic mountains and stark Himalayan landscape. Located at an altitude of around 4,225 metres (13,862 ft), the lake stretches for more than 130 km across the Ladakh region of India and into Tibet.

What makes Pangong Tso remarkable is the way its appearance changes with the light. The water can shift from deep blue and turquoise to shades of green and grey as clouds, sunlight and the surrounding mountains change throughout the day. Against the barren brown mountains, the contrast is almost surreal.

The journey to Pangong is as memorable as the lake itself. The route passes through some of Ladakh’s most dramatic landscapes, including Chang La, one of the world’s highest motorable mountain passes, before descending toward the vast Pangong basin. The changing terrain—from rugged mountains and winding roads to wide-open valleys and the sudden appearance of the blue lake—makes the approach feel like a journey into another world.

Pangong Tso became widely known beyond the travel community after appearing in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots, particularly the iconic final scenes around the lake. Today, it remains one of Ladakh’s most sought-after destinations, but its appeal goes far beyond its cinematic connection.

For travellers, Pangong is best experienced slowly. Walk along the lakeshore, watch the mountains reflect on the water, photograph the changing colours and stay long enough to experience the remarkable silence of the high-altitude landscape. At night, when the skies are clear, the remote location offers spectacular stargazing opportunities.

The environment around Pangong is extremely fragile, and the lake’s high-altitude ecosystem requires responsible tourism. Visitors should avoid littering, respect local restrictions, minimise plastic use and follow designated routes and accommodation guidelines.
