The Taj Mahal at sunrise, the red sandstone Agra Fort and the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri.
Agra is one of India’s most iconic heritage destinations, best known around the world as the home of the Taj Mahal. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a city where Mughal architecture, centuries-old history, traditional crafts and vibrant local life come together.
The Taj Mahal naturally dominates most first-time visits. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, the monument is one of India’s most celebrated architectural masterpieces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its white marble façade, symmetrical gardens, reflecting pool and intricate inlay work make it particularly magical during the early morning light.
But Agra is much more than the Taj Mahal.
The enormous Agra Fort tells another chapter of Mughal history. Built primarily as a military fortification under Akbar and later transformed into an imperial palace by Shah Jahan, the complex contains impressive structures including Diwan-i-Am, Diwan-i-Khas, Khas Mahal, Shish Mahal and Nagina Masjid. Several viewpoints within the fort also offer beautiful views toward the Taj Mahal.
Across the Yamuna, Mehtab Bagh provides one of the finest viewpoints of the Taj Mahal. The historic Mughal garden is particularly rewarding around sunset, when the changing light creates a completely different perspective of the monument.
For travellers interested in going deeper into Mughal history, Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the “Baby Taj”, and Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra make excellent additions. A half-day excursion to Fatehpur Sikri, the former Mughal capital founded by Emperor Akbar, can turn an Agra visit into a broader journey through Mughal architecture and history.
It is also part of India’s famous Golden Triangle, connecting Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, making it easy to incorporate into a larger North India itinerary.
Beyond monuments, explore the city’s bustling bazaars, traditional marble-inlay workshops and local food. Try it’s famous petha, sample Mughlai cuisine and wander through the streets around Tajganj and the old city.
Wander-Wise tip: Don’t make it a one-monument stop. Give yourself at least two full days to experience the Taj Mahal at sunrise, explore Agra Fort, watch the Taj change colour from Mehtab Bagh and discover some of the city’s lesser-known Mughal treasures.
