The Living Root Bridge Trek is one of India’s most extraordinary nature experiences, leading travelers through the lush subtropical rainforests of Meghalaya to witness bridges that are not built but grown. For centuries, the indigenous Khasi community has guided the aerial roots of Indian rubber trees (Ficus elastica) across rivers and streams, creating living bridges that continue to strengthen as they age.
The adventure begins at Tyrna Village, where trekkers descend more than 3,000 stone steps into a pristine valley surrounded by dense forests, waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams. The trail passes through traditional Khasi villages, bamboo bridges, hanging vines, and scenic viewpoints that showcase Meghalaya’s incredible biodiversity.
The highlight of the trek is the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge at Nongriat Village. Estimated to be over 180 years old, this remarkable structure consists of two naturally grown root bridges stacked one above the other. Unlike conventional bridges that deteriorate with time, these living bridges become stronger every year as the tree roots continue to grow and intertwine.
Along the route, visitors encounter turquoise natural pools, hidden waterfalls, exotic butterflies, rare orchids, and an abundance of tropical flora. During the monsoon, the forests become exceptionally vibrant, while the winter months offer pleasant weather and safer trekking conditions with clear skies.
Trekkers often choose to stay overnight in Nongriat Village to fully appreciate the peaceful surroundings and continue to the famous Rainbow Falls, a spectacular waterfall known for the rainbows that frequently appear in its mist under bright sunlight.
Beyond its natural beauty, the Living Root Bridge Trek offers a fascinating insight into Khasi culture and their harmonious relationship with nature. These bridges symbolize sustainable engineering, patience, and traditional ecological knowledge passed down through generations.
Whether you’re a photographer, nature enthusiast, adventure traveler, or cultural explorer, the Living Root Bridge Trek is an unforgettable journey into one of the world’s most unique natural wonders.
