Chasing Rain in Chakrata: A Weekend That Felt Like a Different World

Escaping Delhi’s Heat

Delhi in June can be unforgiving. With temperatures touching 45°C, all we wanted was a quick escape to the mountains. After days of planning, my friends and I packed our bags, loaded the car, and began our overnight drive towards Chakrata, a quiet hill station in Uttarakhand located about 315 kilometres from Delhi.

Instead of driving all the way in one stretch, we decided to halt at Dehradun for the night. We reached the city late, grabbed dinner, rested for a few hours, and prepared ourselves for the final mountain drive the next morning.

Little did we know that the weather waiting for us in Chakrata would surprise all of us.

Into the Mountains

The following morning, we were joined by Anurakt’s cousin, a local who knew the roads and hidden corners of the region. As we left Dehradun behind, the landscape changed dramatically. Wide highways gave way to winding mountain roads, dense forests replaced city traffic, and every turn revealed breathtaking Himalayan scenery.

The drive itself became part of the adventure.

By lunchtime, we finally reached our resort.

Nestled deep inside a dense forest, the property felt completely isolated from the outside world. It was peaceful, surrounded by towering deodar and pine trees, with nothing but birdsong and the sound of the wind.

There were no phones.

Just good friends, warm food, and unforgettable mountain weather.

Exploring Chakrata

The next morning, the weather was clear enough for us to explore the town.

Chakrata isn’t a commercial hill station like Mussoorie or Nainital. It has managed to preserve its peaceful charm and local culture.

We spent time walking through the local market, where small family-run shops sold authentic products from the region.

Among the things we picked up were:

Although our trip was short, we managed to drive around some of the nearby viewpoints and forest roads.

The peaceful surroundings, fresh mountain air, and endless greenery reminded us why Chakrata remains one of Uttarakhand’s most underrated destinations.

That’s exactly what Chakrata gave us.

This wasn’t a luxury vacation or a perfectly planned itinerary.

It was a simple weekend road trip with friends that turned into one of our favourite memories.

From freezing rain in the middle of summer to cooking together, exploring quiet mountain roads, shopping for local specialties, and simply enjoying each other’s company, Chakrata reminded us that the best journeys are often the simplest ones.
