A living sandstone fort, carved merchant havelis and camel safaris into the dunes of Sam and Khuri.
Jaisalmer, often called the Golden City of India, rises dramatically from the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan. Known for its distinctive golden sandstone architecture, magnificent fort, ancient havelis and vast desert landscapes, Jaisalmer offers a very different experience from Rajasthan’s lake and palace cities. The city’s warm sandstone buildings seem to glow under the desert sun, creating an atmosphere that feels almost timeless.
At the centre of Jaisalmer is the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort, a living heritage fort built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal. Unlike many forts that function primarily as monuments, Jaisalmer Fort continues to be home to residents, shops, temples, cafés and traditional houses. Walking through its narrow lanes reveals beautifully carved façades, sandstone balconies and centuries-old architecture.
Beyond the fort, Jaisalmer’s historic havelis are among its most impressive attractions. Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli and Nathmal Ki Haveli showcase the intricate craftsmanship for which the city is famous. Their elaborate balconies, stone carvings and detailed façades reflect the wealth and artistic traditions of merchants who once lived along the old trade routes.

The city’s relationship with the desert is equally important. A trip to Sam Sand Dunes offers the classic Jaisalmer desert experience, with camel rides, dune landscapes and spectacular sunsets. For a more immersive experience, spending a night at a desert camp allows travellers to experience traditional Rajasthani music, folk performances, local food and the extraordinary silence of the Thar after dark.
For a quieter side of the city, Gadisar Lake is worth exploring, particularly around sunrise or sunset. The historic lake is surrounded by temples, shrines and sandstone structures and provides a peaceful contrast to the activity around the fort.
It is also a destination for discovering Rajasthani culture and cuisine. Explore the old city’s markets for handicrafts, textiles and traditional items, try local dishes such as dal baati churma and ker sangri, and spend an evening listening to folk musicians perform traditional desert songs.
The best time to visit the city is generally during the cooler months from October to March, when desert temperatures are more comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor experiences. Summer can become extremely hot, making daytime exploration challenging.
A 2–3 day trip works well for first-time visitors, allowing enough time to explore Jaisalmer Fort and the havelis, experience the desert and enjoy the city’s cultural atmosphere without rushing.
Jaisalmer is more than a desert destination. It is a city shaped by trade, craftsmanship, royal history and desert culture—a place where golden architecture meets endless sand and the past still feels remarkably alive.
