Mehrangarh rises above a sea of indigo houses, with the marble Jaswant Thada and the clock tower bazaar below.
Jodhpur, famously known as the Blue City of Rajasthan, is a captivating destination where imposing forts, blue-painted houses, bustling bazaars and centuries of Marwari heritage come together. Located on the edge of the Thar Desert, Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha and developed around the formidable Mehrangarh Fort. The city’s blue houses spread out beneath the fort create one of Rajasthan’s most recognisable urban landscapes.
The magnificent Mehrangarh Fort is the centrepiece of any visit to Jodhpur. Rising dramatically above the old city, the fort contains massive gateways, courtyards, palaces and an impressive collection of royal artefacts. Its elevated position also provides spectacular views across the blue-painted neighbourhoods below, making it one of the best places to understand why Jodhpur earned its nickname.
Exploring Jodhpur’s old city is an experience in itself. Wander through the narrow lanes around the fort and discover blue houses, small temples, traditional shops and local markets. Jaswant Thada, a beautifully carved white-marble memorial surrounded by landscaped gardens, provides a quieter contrast to the imposing fort nearby.

For a taste of everyday Jodhpur, head towards Sardar Market and the Clock Tower, where vendors sell spices, textiles, handicrafts, jewellery and traditional Rajasthani products. The market is also an excellent place to sample local flavours, including pyaaz kachori, mirchi vada, makhaniya lassi and traditional Rajasthani sweets.
The city has a strong connection with Marwari culture and craftsmanship. Visitors can explore traditional textiles, pottery, leather goods and handicrafts, while the old neighbourhoods reveal architectural details that are easy to miss when simply moving between major attractions.
For a different perspective of the city, Toorji Ka Jhalra, a historic stepwell in the old city, is worth visiting. Its geometric sandstone steps and surrounding heritage buildings make it one of Jodhpur’s most distinctive urban landmarks. Mandore Gardens, located outside the main city, offers another glimpse into the region’s history through temples, cenotaphs and gardens.
Jodhpur is also well suited to travellers who enjoy rooftop dining and sunset views. As evening approaches, the fort and surrounding blue houses take on warm golden tones, creating one of the city’s most memorable moments.
For first-time visitors, 2–3 days is enough to explore Mehrangarh Fort, the old city, Jaswant Thada, local markets and some of the city’s culinary and cultural experiences. October to March is generally the most comfortable period for exploring Jodhpur, particularly for walking through the old city and visiting outdoor attractions.
Jodhpur is more than a city of blue houses and a magnificent fort. It is a living expression of Rajasthan’s royal history, Marwari culture, architecture, food and craftsmanship—best discovered by slowing down and wandering through its old streets.
