Sonmarg

Sonmarg, meaning “Meadow of Gold,” is one of Kashmir’s most spectacular mountain destinations. Located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu & Kashmir, Sonmarg is surrounded by snow-covered peaks, alpine meadows, glaciers and the Sindh River, creating the kind of dramatic Himalayan scenery that makes Kashmir so memorable. The destination is particularly popular with travellers looking for mountain landscapes, trekking, snow experiences and scenic road trips.

The journey to Sonmarg is an experience in itself. As you travel from Srinagar towards the mountains, the landscape gradually changes from the Kashmir Valley’s lush countryside to towering peaks and narrow mountain valleys. The Sindh River accompanies much of the route, while small villages and forests add to the scenery. Sonmarg’s open meadows provide an impressive contrast to the dense greenery found elsewhere in Kashmir.

Things to Experience in Sonmarg

One of Sonmarg’s biggest attractions is its access to the Thajiwas Glacier, where visitors can experience snow and dramatic alpine scenery for much of the year. Depending on local conditions, the area can be explored on foot or by authorised local pony services. The glacier and surrounding mountains are particularly popular with photographers and travellers visiting Kashmir for their first snow experience.

For adventure enthusiasts, Sonmarg also serves as a starting point for several high-altitude treks. The famous Amarnath route passes through the broader region, while treks towards alpine lakes and mountain passes offer more challenging experiences for experienced hikers. Because conditions can change quickly at high altitude, trekking should always be undertaken with appropriate local guidance and current weather information.

The Sindh River adds another dimension to the destination. Its clear mountain waters, rocky banks and surrounding peaks create beautiful spots for photography and quiet walks. Simply spending time in the meadows, watching clouds move across the mountains or enjoying a picnic with the valley around you can be as rewarding as visiting individual attractions.

Sonmarg changes dramatically with the seasons. Summer brings green meadows and easier access to the surrounding landscape, while autumn adds golden and orange tones to the valley. Winter brings heavy snow and a very different experience, although accessibility can be affected by snowfall and road conditions.

For a first visit, 1–2 days can work well as part of a larger Kashmir itinerary, while travellers interested in trekking and exploring the surrounding mountains should allow additional time.

Sonmarg is not just a sightseeing stop on the Kashmir circuit. It is a place where the road, river, meadows and mountains come together to create one of the most dramatic landscapes in the valley.
