Trekking
The Chadar Trek is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary winter treks in the world. Unlike traditional mountain treks, this adventure follows the frozen Zanskar River, known locally as the “Chadar,” meaning blanket of ice. Every winter, as temperatures plunge below -30°C (-22°F), the flowing river transforms into a solid sheet of ice, creating a natural pathway through the spectacular Zanskar Gorge.
Beginning near Chilling Village, about 65 kilometers from Leh, the trek takes adventurers deep into one of the most remote regions of the Indian Himalayas. Towering cliffs rise dramatically on either side of the frozen river, while frozen waterfalls, massive icicles, snow-covered peaks, and pristine landscapes create an almost surreal environment that feels untouched by time.
Each day presents new challenges as trekkers carefully navigate sections of crystal-clear ice, fresh snow, rocky trails, and occasionally flowing water where the ice has shifted. The constantly changing conditions make every expedition unique, requiring both physical endurance and mental resilience. Experienced local guides continually assess the safest route, adapting the trail as the river changes.
Camping on the banks of the Zanskar River is an adventure in itself. Nights are spent in insulated tents under brilliantly clear skies illuminated by countless stars. Despite the extreme cold, warm meals prepared by the support crew and the camaraderie of fellow trekkers make each evening memorable.
The Chadar Trek also offers rare insights into the lives of the Zanskari people, who historically used this frozen river as their only winter route to the outside world. Along the journey, trekkers may encounter remote villages, Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the icy wind, and ancient monasteries perched high on rocky cliffs, showcasing the resilience and rich cultural heritage of Ladakh.
Due to its harsh weather, high altitude, and physically demanding conditions, the Chadar Trek is recommended for experienced trekkers with good fitness levels. Proper acclimatization in Leh is essential before beginning the expedition. Those who complete the trek are rewarded with one of the most remarkable adventure experiences anywhere on Earth.
