Kedarnath

Kedarnath is one of India’s most revered Himalayan pilgrimage destinations, set high in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand beside the Mandakini River. At around 3,580–3,584 metres above sea level, the town is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks and is centred around the ancient Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It forms part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and is also one of the five sacred temples of the Panch Kedar.

The spiritual heart of Kedarnath

The Kedarnath Temple is the reason most travellers undertake the demanding journey to this remote Himalayan valley. Built from massive, evenly cut grey stone slabs, the temple has a striking, imposing appearance against the surrounding mountains. Inside, a distinctive conical rock formation is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form. A Nandi statue stands outside the entrance, facing the sanctum.

According to Hindu tradition, the story of Kedarnath is connected with the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. Seeking redemption after the Kurukshetra war, they are believed to have sought Lord Shiva’s blessings. Shiva is said to have appeared in the form of a bull and attempted to evade them. When he disappeared into the ground, his hump remained at Kedarnath, while other parts of the divine form are traditionally associated with Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar—together forming the Panch Kedar.

The present temple is traditionally associated with Adi Shankaracharya, with official tourism sources describing the existing structure as more than 1,200 years old and associating its establishment with the 8th century.

The journey to Kedarnath

Part of it’s appeal is that reaching the temple is itself a pilgrimage experience. The principal trekking route begins at Gaurikund and climbs through the Himalayan landscape toward the temple. Official Uttarakhand Tourism currently describes the route as approximately 19 km, while the temple committee describes it as around 16 km, reflecting differences in route measurements.

The trail passes through mountain scenery, forests, waterfalls and increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. For travellers who cannot or do not wish to complete the journey entirely on foot, regulated alternative transport options may be available depending on current conditions and government arrangements.

Because it sits above 3,500 metres, the altitude and changing Himalayan weather should be taken seriously. The journey is much more than a conventional sightseeing trip—it requires preparation, patience and respect for the mountain environment.

Beyond the main temple

It has several experiences and sights worth adding to a pilgrimage itinerary.

Bhairavnath Temple sits above Kedarnath and offers sweeping views over the valley and temple area. The uphill route from Kedarnath is relatively short but steep.

Gandhi Sarovar, also known as Chorabari Lake, lies near the Chorabari glacier. The route offers beautiful Himalayan scenery, including waterfalls and mountain landscapes, although conditions can change rapidly.

Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, located behind the Kedarnath Temple, is traditionally regarded as the place where Adi Shankaracharya attained moksha. It is an important spiritual site for pilgrims visiting Kedarnath.

The surrounding Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary adds another dimension to the region, with its Himalayan ecosystems and wildlife, including the Himalayan musk deer and a variety of high-altitude birds.

The landscape

What makes it particularly memorable is the contrast between spiritual architecture and immense Himalayan wilderness. The temple sits on a broad valley floor while towering peaks rise around it. Kedarnath Peak, Kedar Dome and other Himalayan mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the settlement.

The landscape changes dramatically through the pilgrimage season—from snow and cold mountain conditions early in the season to greener valleys and clearer trekking trails later in the year.

Why visit Kedarnath?

Kedarnath isn’t simply a destination for seeing an ancient temple. It is the combination of faith, physical endurance, Himalayan landscapes and a sense of journey that makes the experience distinctive.

You walk through the mountains to reach a centuries-old shrine, surrounded by peaks and silence. For many pilgrims, the effort involved in reaching Kedarnath is an integral part of the spiritual experience.
