Valley of Flowers National Park

Valley of Flowers National Park is one of the Himalayas’ most extraordinary natural landscapes—a high-altitude valley that transforms into a spectacular carpet of alpine flowers during the monsoon. Located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the park covers around 87 sq km and forms one of the two core zones of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, alongside Nanda Devi National Park. It is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks.”

At around 3,600 metres above sea level, the valley is surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks, waterfalls, streams, alpine meadows and rugged mountain terrain. Its combination of extraordinary scenery and biodiversity makes it much more than a trekking destination—it is one of India’s most significant high-altitude ecosystems.

The defining experience is the transformation of the valley of flowers national park during the flowering season.

Uttarakhand Tourism notes more than 600 species of flowering plants, including orchids, poppies, primulas, marigolds, daisies and anemones. The precise appearance of the valley changes with altitude, rainfall and the progression of the season, so every visit can look slightly different.

The strongest flowering period is generally July to September, when the meadows become particularly vibrant. The official Uttarakhand Tourism platform also describes July–September as the period when flowers are at their most abundant.

This is why the Valley of Flowers should not be marketed simply as a place with “beautiful flowers.” The real experience is walking through an entire high-altitude ecosystem that changes colour as you move through the valley.

🏔️ A UNESCO World Heritage Landscape

The Valley of Flowers is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Parks, inscribed in 1988 and expanded in 2005 to include the Valley of Flowers.

UNESCO recognises the area for two major reasons:

Exceptional natural beauty — the high-altitude valley, alpine meadows and surrounding Himalayan landscape create an outstanding wilderness setting.

Biodiversity — the valley contains a rich variety of West Himalayan alpine flora, including threatened and regionally distinctive plant species.

The combined UNESCO property covers 71,210 hectares, including 8,750 hectares for Valley of Flowers National Park and 62,460 hectares for Nanda Devi National Park.

🥾 The Trek to Valley of Flowers

The Valley of Flowers is accessible through a trekking route rather than by road.

For most travellers, the journey involves reaching Govindghat, travelling onward towards Ghangaria, and then undertaking the trek into the Valley of Flowers.

Ghangaria acts as the principal base for the trek, with the valley reached on foot from there. Uttarakhand Tourism describes the route as featuring waterfalls, wild streams and changing Himalayan landscapes along the way.

This makes the journey itself an important part of the experience.

You’re not simply arriving at a viewpoint—the landscape gradually changes from mountain villages and forests to alpine terrain and finally the flower-filled valley.

Auli can act as a Nearby / Extended Himalayan Journey rather than making Valley of Flowers a subsection of Auli.
